The History of The Beatles "A Hard Day's Night Card" Printer's PROOF SHEET
Used in the 1960's during the card manufacturing process, Printer's Proof Sheets allowed Quality Control to accurately calibrate the Printer's Register Marks on the "negatives" and properly assess the print-quality of the product prior to the official run. Typical concerns were photo clarity, ink contrast and printing machine quality, just to name a few. If the Printer's Register Marks were out of alignment (causing a "blurry" photo), inks were low or "dry" (causing fading or uneven ink distribution), or the printing machine was dirty (causing random "spotting" in the photos or even worse, "jamming"), this problem would be realized after passing many "test sheets" (also known as Printer's Proofs) through the machine before preparing it to produce 1000's upon 1000's of large sheets of cards ready to be cut into individual cards. These Uncut Card Printer's PROOF SHEETS are Incredibly Rare and Nearly Impossible to find!!!
This process had to be performed on EACH MACHINE being used EVERY TIME a new card (baseball, football, Beatles, Monkees, etc.) was to be manufactured on a massive scale for the entire country. Testing each machine in this fashion would definitely result in much wasted paper in order to guarantee an end-result "quality" product. In an effort to keep costs down, only Single-Sided gray-back cardstock sheets were used during this calibration process. If these "test-runs" were omitted during the card manufacturing phase, the chances of producing horribly flawed product would almost be certain, resulting in numerous consumer complaints and returned merchandise. Topps Inc. wasn't about to take such chances and possibly ruin their reputation. Therefore, the need to print "Printer's Proof Sheets" was essential.
Once the Printer's Proof Card Sheets passed Quality Control measures, the more expensive Double-Sided large cardstock paper was inserted into the machines for the Final Production Run, producing ONLY the "photo side" of the cards (Final-Run Phase 1), which were later fed into another machine to print up the backs of the cards (Final-Run Phase 2). "Tens of thousands" of Uncut Card Sheets for all types of cards found over the years with the "card backs printed" are the result of Test Runs of "Final-Run Phase 2", and are relatively "very common". However, very "FEW" Printer's Proof Sheets have ever surfaced and survived all these years! They are simply ULTRA-RARE!!!
Personally obtained from the Estate of a Topps Inc. Art Department Production Executive. The Production Executive began working for Topps back in the mid-1950's up through the entire 1960's. Long retired, he passed away in 1986. His son, from whom we purchased this Beatles item directly, lived with his elderly mother in his parent's home until early 2001, when his mother passed away. It was then, during the packing of his parents belongings in order to sell the home, that only a few of these Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" Printer's PROOF Sheets were discovered. They were neatly stored among many Baseball Card Printer's Proof sheets that were also discovered packed away in their attic for nearly 40 years! We were fortunate enough to have acquired only a handful of these Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" ULTRA-RARE UNCUT Printer's PROOF Sheets!
SPECIAL NOTE: "BEWARE OF COUNTERFEIT REPRODUCTIONS!"
Unfortunately, as with almost all Rare Original Items these days....there are a few "dishonest auction website" dealers and "other internet dealers" selling "low-quality counterfeit reproductions" of these Beatles Printer's Proof Sheets. It's really a shame that those who were not there to buy the AUTHENTIC Proof Sheets have decided to reproduce absolutely POOR QUALITY Bootlegs and try to pass off these "INFERIOR QUALITY Knock-off's" to the unsuspecting public, thereby cheating customers who are paying for these "worthless investment counterfeits". We have recently discovered that these counterfeits are being bootlegged from a notorious dealer out of the OHIO area, so BEWARE & AVOID this dealer (& possibly others) selling these bootleg counterfeit USA Collectibles!
The "Good News" is that these "WORTHLESS counterfeit reproductions" are very easy to spot, and we'll show you how so you will not get STUCK with one!!!
The AUTHENTIC Beatles Printer's Proof Sheets can be distinguished from the "poor-quality counterfeits" as follows:
The AUTHENTIC Sheets are only printed on Single-Sided Cardstock Sheets with a Light-GRAY backing, whereas the "un-focused counterfeits" are printed on "solid white Posterboard", which is much too thick and completely the wrong paper type than that used for manufacturing typical Beatles Trading Cards produced by Topps Inc.
The AUTHENTIC Sheets are the exact and correct "Red-Tint Sepia Color", only achieved through a 2-Color Printing Process using RED and BLACK Negatives with matching Inks. These are the Negatives that have the Printer's Register Marks which must be "correctly aligned" to give a well-defined & focused photo on the cards themselves. (As an interesting experiment, examine any ORIGINAL Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" Card and look at it through a magnifying glass very closely along the outside edges of the photo area . During the manufacturing process, the negatives will slightly shift due to machine vibrations (thereby becoming slightly misaligned). As a result of this phenomenon, one can typically see TWO DOTS where there looks like there is only ONE DOT from a distance. The combination of these dots "creates" the "Red-Tint Sepia Color". Depending upon the "negative alignment" used at the time when your card was manufactured that you've selected to examine, you may or may not be able to see the slightly "misaligned" RED & BLACK DOTS. A sample photo of one card made with misaligned negatives is provided here. With all that explained, the "counterfeit" card sheets are made in BLACK & WHITE only, as it would be "impossible" to faithfully reproduce the Sepia TWO DOT Process "without using the Original Two-Color Separation Negatives". In short, the "counterfeits" are the WRONG COLOR!!!
NONE of the AUTHENTIC Sheets were ever cut down to make "individual Blank-Back" cards. All Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" cards with Blank Backs on the posterboard paper stock are "counterfeits" - period.
The AUTHENTIC Sheets are an EXACT 1:1 match on a PIXEL BY PIXEL Basis when compared to Original Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" cards (Pixels are the tiny dots that make up the photos on the cards) . On the "counterfeits", DOZENS of "pixels" are MISSING. Included here for your comparison is a card photo featuring Paul's Grandfather with Ringo. Notice that the Grandfather's "forehead" is very detailed on the AUTHENTIC Beatles Printer's Proof Sheet, and that on the "counterfeit" much of the detail in the Grandfather's forehead is MISSING, forcing the photo to look "BLEACHED and WASHED OUT". In the printing business, this phenomenon is known as a "Generation Loss", which is the LOSS of DETAIL when making a "copy" off of an "Original", resulting in an Inferior product.
Finally, the AUTHENTIC Sheets feature card photos that are the EXACT SAME SIZE as the Original Beatles "A Hard Day's Night" cards. The "counterfeit" card photos are a fraction of an inch SMALLER (they're OFF SCALE!) than those found on the AUTHENTIC Card Sheets!
